A contemporary art event in Pavia

The Castello Visconteo of Pavia, built in 1360 by order of Galeazzo II Visconti, is one of the city’s most significant historical symbols. It was the residence of the Visconti courts of Gian Galeazzo and Filippo Maria Visconti and preserves great architectural and cultural value.

Today, it houses the Civic Museums of Pavia, a major museum complex collecting art, archaeology, and history, and serving as a reference point for local and national culture.

Exhibition spaces and enhancement of contemporary art

The revival of the castle’s underground spaces

The castle’s underground spaces, originally used as military stables from the 18th to 19th centuries, were restored and transformed into an elegant exhibition area dedicated to contemporary art.

This historic environment was designed to promote dialogue between the ancient and the contemporary, encouraging the exchange of artistic languages and stimulating new forms of interaction and cultural inclusion.

“In Contemporanea”: current art in the Civic Museum

A new exhibition cycle

In 2009, the In Contemporanea project was launched, a new section dedicated to current art, aimed at promoting emerging and established artists through innovative exhibitions.

Stefano Bressani inaugurates the project with Sculture Vestite

The first exhibition of this cycle featured Stefano Bressani’s Sculture Vestite. The Pavia-born artist stands out in the Italian contemporary art scene for a unique and original sculptural technique based on the expert use of fabrics.

Biography of Stefano Bressani

The exhibition: 35 works combining pop art, tailoring, and sculpture

The Technique of Sculture Vestite

The exhibition presented 35 works created between 2007 and 2008, in which the artist combines elements of sculpture, tailoring, and design to create three-dimensional figures ranging from:

  • Pop portraits inspired by cinema icons such as Marilyn Monroe and James Dean
  • Female nudes
  • Architectural works and landscapes
  • Musical and natural references

Colors, forms, and materials: Bressani’s visual language

Each work features a skillful use of colors, materials, and forms that communicate a personal and innovative vision, creating a balance between aesthetics and concept, craftsmanship and research.

A turning point in Stefano Bressani’s career

Sculture Vestite marked a fundamental moment in Bressani’s career: his first official museum exhibition in his hometown, an important recognition opening an expressive path based on:

  • Technical experimentation
  • Enhancement of textile material
  • Connection between art and local culture
  • Reinterpretation of pop language through volume and color
